A Post-It Would Have Been Better

My first “breakup” occurred in Middle School.  Granted, we’d never gone on one single date, but we definately ate lunch together and stuff.   I remember it as clearly as the white turtleneck dickie that so unfortunately adorned my collarbone.  Within one split second of reaching my locker, I went from being a girl with a permanent smile and a trapper keeper full of  “jonny loves britteny” doodles to reading a breakup note attached to my locker with yellow sticky tac.

Sticky tac…

Sticky tac?

It read, and I quote, We’re broken up.”  True story.

Then, as quickly as that my entire world as I had known it came to a screeching hault.  Trying to recover from such a devastating social blow at that critical age was but merely impossible.  The questions… the glares…. and of course, the stress-induced breakouts.

Looking back, although the intensity of that situation had been entirely exaggerated by my inexperienced mind, that first relationship possessed a beautiful simplicity that I could only come to appreciate long after moving on to consecutive loves.  Fights back then were over not showing up to a baseball game or walking someone down the hallway.  Those were the delicate issues that determined whether or not your relationship was going to stand the test of time.

Don’t we wish for that kind of heartache again.

But seriously,  sticky tac?
